What is periodontics?
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease. It is one of the most common treatments offered in dental clinics.
There are two main types of gum disease:
- Gingivitis: This is the initial stage of periodontal disease and causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of the gum tissue surrounding the base of the teeth.
- Periodontitis: This is the second stage of periodontal disease. In this stage, gum recession and bone loss occur. If left untreated, this will leave the teeth without bone support, causing them to become loose and mobile.
How can you identify periodontal disease?
- Signs of periodontal disease:
- Bleeding gums
- Redness
- Swelling
- Gum recession
- Bad breath
- Tooth mobility
What is the goal of periodontics?
Periodontics aims to maintain teeth in both a functional and aesthetic condition.
What does periodontal treatment involve?
Periodontal treatment is a comprehensive procedure consisting of several phases:
• Periodontal study
The first phase involves taking dental X-rays, as well as measuring the depth of tartar buildup under the gums to determine the stage of the disease and establish a diagnosis for each affected tooth.
• Scaling and root planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep periodontal cleaning process that removes hardened bacterial plaque accumulated below the gum line.
To perform this procedure, we use an instrument called a curette, which allows access to the crevices of the mouth.
Therefore, this process is also commonly known as dental curettage.
When tartar buildup is very deep, pockets form between the gum and the tooth, called periodontal pockets.
Therefore, the scaling and root planing we perform in our clinic is meticulously measured and planned.
Scaling and root planing is painless for the patient, as it is performed under local anesthesia, and we complete the procedure in two sessions, each lasting approximately one hour.
That is, we divide the mouth into two quadrants to minimize any potential discomfort.
After both appointments, our professionals will emphasize the importance of proper oral hygiene to prevent future recurrence of periodontitis.
Therefore, we will provide the patient with specific hygiene instructions tailored to their individual case.
• Re-evaluation
Three months after treatment, we schedule a follow-up appointment to take new measurements of the tartar buildup on the gums and assess the overall state of their oral health.
Since we have initial records, we can compare both measurements and determine the success of the treatment.
The probing performed during this appointment will also be recorded for future checkups.
• Follow-up
Once the periodontitis has been eradicated, we will establish a periodontal maintenance plan and schedule checkups to prevent recurrence.
